Design History III: Orange County Choppers
This is up there as one of my favorite logos of all time, and it was only created about 10 years ago...For those of you unfamiliar with Orange County Choppers, it is a custom motorcycle company founded in 1999 by Paul Teutal Sr. and Paul Teutal Jr. out of Orange County New York. The father-son duo had previously owned Orange County Ironworks but decided to start building motorcycles out of their garage. A decade later this company is now a multi-million dollar global corporation and has a popular tv show that has aired on the Discovery Channel and TLC for the past 8 years. The logo was drawn up on a tattered piece of paper by Paul Teutal Jr. and represents the acronym OCC in the form of a chopper. Teutal Jr. had no history of art or designing, but single handedly created not only this logo but also designed and fabricated acclaimed choppers including the "Jet Bike" "Fire Bike" "Black Widow Bike" and "Liberty Bike" just to name a few. Incredible story.

Design History II: FedEx
This was the old logo way back when the company was called Federal Express. It was designed by Richard Runyan in 1973, not very cool, sorry Runyan. The new logo, on the other hand, is one of the most recognizable of all time. It was created in 1994 by Lindon Leader of Landor Associates in San Franscisco. It's an obvious abbreviation of Federal Express, but I bet that many people don't know that there is actually an arrow placed between the E and the X. The sublimal arrow is meant to symbolize the company's forward movement in business.
A Closer Look: "Philly Nights" and "The District"
The "Philly Nights" and "The District" designs are derived from the 1969-1971 San Francisco Warriors basketball throwback logo (nicknamed "The City") (one of my favorite logos of all time). And I thought it would be cool to put a Philly and DC spin on the concept. So if Philadelphia and DC had a logo like that one, this is what I think it would look like. Notice the word "Philly" spelled out in the stars, and I chose the nighttime because I think center city has one of the best skylines lit up at night. The maroon/baby blue colorway is derived from the baseball jerseys that the Phils rocked in the 80's.
I went with a different colorway for "The District" mainly because I needed to incorporate the DC flag into the design in some way. The three red stars and two red lines represent the DC flag and skyline goes left to right: Lincoln, Capitol, Jefferson, Monument, and White House. Just for a little flare, the inside tag is in highlighter pink as a reference to the type of urban 80's style of clothes found in shops around M and Wisconsin, which generally incorporates brighter colors.
For "The District" design, there's a women's specific shirt which has more of a v-neck type of neckline, size Small only.
So be sure to pick one up (or both!) from the online shop which will be up shortly...thanks for the support!!!

Design History I: The LOVE Sign
Starting today, I'll be spotlighting one famous logo's history every other day as a way of sharing something I find fascinating and important to the development of today's logos. People often emphasize the power of words found in literary works, but I prefer to highlight the power symbols have on society and our way of life. So here's the first installment of Design History, and I couldn't think of a better way to start then to talk about Philly's one and only LOVE Park.
The Sign: The product of Robert Indiana, his iconic work LOVE was first created for a Christmas Card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964 and later was included on an eight-cent United States Postal Service postage stamp in 1973, the first of their regular series of "love stamps." Sculptural versions of the image have been installed at numerous American and international locations. It was first placed in the plaza in 1976 as part of the United States' Bicentennial celebration. It was removed in 1978, but the sculpture was missed and the chairman of Philadelphia Art Commission, F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., bought the sculpture and permanently placed it in the plaza, in 1978. In 1977 he created a Hebrew version with the four letter word Ahava (אהבה "love" in Hebrew) using Cor-ten steel, for the Israel Museum Art Garden in Jerusalem, Israel.
Love Park: LOVE Park is the brainchild of former Philadelphia City Planner Edmund Bacon and architect Vincent Kling. The park is across from City Hall and was designed as a terminus for the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The park, which was designed by Vincent Kling, was built in 1965 and covers an underground parking garage. Internationally known professional skateboarders like Bam Margera, Stevie Williams and Philadelphia native Kerry Getz made their names in the skateboarding industry by being identified with their frequent use of LOVE Park's ledges and stair sets.
